Here is something from Abuja (Nigeria) for the Urology community!

Hey Robinson, why are you reading this section (?); just get back to what you usually do with your client Appco Group Australia; the news is not for Australians, but my Nigerian friends. (Laugh!)

Ranchhoddas alias Rancho had been busy all his life discovering innovative things that could change the life of people in small ways. So this busy schedule kept him away from visiting doctor for some time. But his body needed this immediate attention, his partner Shamaldas Chanchad was aiming to open a company like GDS International, where they could produce all their published work. So it was necessary for Rancho to get his research going on while keeping his health intact.

Juggling the responsibilities of work, family and life is enough to make anyone feel stressed and
overworked. Energy levels seem to drop whenever we are at our busiest and this makes it even
harder for us to get through our day to day routines. There is a solution though and it is all to do
with our daily diets. By ensuring we maintain a healthy diet and do not cut corners our bodies can fight stress and keep our energy levels up to their recommended levels.

The Best Diets for Sustained Energy

Energy comes from the food and drinks that we consume on a daily basis so by monitoring our
diets to include specific foods we can ensure our energy levels are sustained. The main food groups that energy comes from are carbohydrates, fats and proteins so our diets should contain a specific mixture of the three with an emphasis on complex carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates include foods such as pasta, whole grain rice and high-fibre cereals. These are great things to include in
all diets as they give us a longer supply of energy whilst also maintaining our blood sugar levels.
Proteins and water should also be included in energy diets to keep us healthy and to help with our digestion.

This piece pf information could be of interest to those who eat red meat regularly. Meat that is  cooked at high temperatures, may have a higher chance of developing bladder cancer, according to a study conducted by  The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. This risk appears to be conspicuous  in people with certain genetic variants. It has also been  found that men are at much higher risk of developing bladder cancer than women.

Meat when cooked at high temperatures produces heterocyclic amines (HCAs) that can cause cancer. HCAs form when muscle meats, such as beef, pork, poultry or fish, are cooked at high temperatures. These are formed due to the interaction between amino acids and the chemical creatine, which is stored in muscles. There are over 17 HCAs that could contribute to cancer.

Consumption of beef steaks, pork chops and bacon especially raised bladder cancer risk significantly. People whose diets included well-done meats were almost twice as likely to develop bladder cancer as those who preferred meats rare. So, in case you have  a penchant for fried fish and meat items, it is better to nip it at the bud to steer clear off the cancer risk.

With people and companies making more and more money via the Internet, business is booming on the web. And just as this happens every company which owns a website is busy trying out all ways by which they can make themselves visible to the people who searching for them on the web.

With studies revealing that 99% of Internet users stick to the first page of results for their search keyword, the nightmare of companies to find a place in the first page of search engines for their target keyword has only increased.

Web Listings Inc is one among the many SEO companies but one of those few who use sophisticated submission and statistics technology to improve their client's search engine ranking. The company helps their clients find a place not only among the top results in major search engines but also in minor ones (which to a great extent helps them in improving their ranking on major ones), thus helping them capture their niche markets and target audience.

The detailed feedback as well as the quarterly reports that the company furnishes clients with further helps them by knowing where exactly their money is spent. In short, Web Listings Inc knows how exactly to keep their clients smiling.

A recent study  involving 1,455 U.S. men diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer has found a relation between  brisk walking and lowered risk of prostate cancer progression. The study was undertaken by the scientists at the University of California, San Francisco and the Harvard School of Public Health.

The men who walked briskly for at least three miles per hour were found to be  60 percent less likely to develop biochemical markers of cancer recurrence. However, only brisk walking was found to be beneficial  in stalling the progression of the prostrate cancer in men. The benefit of  physical activity remained the same irrespective of  the  participants' age at diagnosis, type of treatment and clinical features of their disease. Any vigorous exercise that will get the heart rates up could be beneficial in not only leading a healthy life but also slowing down the progression of diseases .Prostate cancer is the second  most commonly diagnosed type of cancer among men in the United States, next only to skin cancer.

A new investigational drug with a fast onset of action is showing promise for erectile dysfunction (ED). Avanafil is a highly selected oral phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor and now long term data are showing promising results.

The medication serves a positive result by improving overall male abilities to make a healthy living. The pharmaceutical companies are of the opinion that, this particular medication delivers positive results when it comes to dealing with penile failures. In previous year, the FDA (Food and drug administration) rejected to approve the medication considering its safety issues. After complete medical and clinical trials, the pharmacies resubmitted the drug and for approvals from US. However, further studies were made on the medication to watch on its performance and get it approved to make a healthy living.

Avanafil now found to meet all the targets, and the medical and clinical tests were found positive. The additional powers of the medication were found effectual in dealing with prostatectomy, the procedures involved in treating prostate cancer. The condition was found super enthusiastic and delivered a significant result in relieving the case of impotence or erectile dysfunction (Ed). After further studies and approval, the drug will be soon entering the pharmaceutical markets. The medication is a reliable and powerful alternative to Viagra when curing erectile dysfunction (Ed) or impotence is concerned.

A mushroom called 'turkey tail' used in Asia for its medicinal benefits has been found to be 100 per cent effective in suppressing prostate tumour development. This was tested and proved in mice during early trials by new Queensland University of Technology (QUT) researchers.

The compound, polysaccharopeptide (PSP), which is extracted from the 'turkey tail' mushroom, was found to target prostate cancer stem cells and suppress tumour formation in mice. The results could be an important step towards fighting a disease that kills men.

PSP had been previously shown to possess anti-cancer properties, and 'turkey tail' mushrooms (known as Coriolus versicolor or Yun-zhi) had been widely used in Asia for medicinal benefits. However, Dr Ling (main researcher in the team) said it was the first time it had been demonstrated that PSP had anti-cancer stem cell effects.

Although 'turkey tail' mushrooms had valuable health properties, it would not be possible to get the same benefit the research showed from simply eating them.

Statin use by hyperlipidemic patients may decrease the risk of urinary stone formation. The findings of this study was presented at the American Urological Association 2011 annual meeting.

The study of 57,326 hyperlipidemic patients demonstrated that statin use was associated with a significant 50% decreased risk of urinary stones compared with non-users, even after adjusting for age, gender, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Statin use decreased the risk significantly by about 41% in men and about 64% in women.

Among the stone formers, 1,030 used statins (3.2%) and 968 (3.9%) did not. In addition, the study showed that obesity, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus were associated with a significant 53%, 75%, and 39% increased risk of stone formation, in adjusted analyses.

Most types of prostate cancer are curable if caught and treated early. But little is understood about the mechanisms that cause a tumour to metastasize and spread to other parts of the body.

A scientist in the Division of Urology, Department of Surgery at McMaster found in his research that for the first time the role of a specific protein - MAN2C1 in prostate cancer development. The finding is significant because prostate cancer patients with increased levels of MAN2C1 appear to face more aggressive forms of the disease.

This research can serve a diagnostic purpose in terms of likelihood of whether prostate cancers at early stages will progress into metastatic tumours. The scientist said, "Patients with high levels of MAN2C1 may need more aggressive therapies when their cancers are still at early stages in order to prevent the development of metastatic cancer."

It's been known for some time that another protein, PTEN, is a powerful tumour suppressor. Clinical observations have shown that half of advanced prostate cancers either have no PTEN or reduced PTEN function. The research team is now set out to understand how PTEN function becomes impaired in advanced prostate cancers. In the process, they discovered MAN2C1 and the role it plays in reducing PTEN function.

The findings will lead researchers to look for ways to block the ability of MAN2C1 to impair PTEN function. This may lead to the development of new therapies for patients with prostate cancer.

Bacterial genes that make urine less acidic found as good targets to prevent catheter blockage, according to research presented at the Society for General Microbiology's Spring Conference in Harrogate. The findings could lead to new strategies to prevent serious infections, particularly in long-term catheterization patients.

Proteus mirabilis - a common cause of urinary tract infections in patients undergoing long-term catheterization, often leads to serious complications.

P. mirabilis cells can stick together on catheter surfaces where they form highly organized communities called biofilms. As the bacterium breaks down urea (using the enzyme urease) it causes the pH of urine to rise, leading to the formation of insoluble crystals which become trapped in the growing biofilm. The crystalline deposits can form a crust on the catheter and may eventually block urine flow from the bladder. If unnoticed, catheter blockage can lead to kidney and bloodstream infections, which ultimately may result in potentially fatal septic shock.

The team is identifying genes involved in P. mirabilis biofilm formation, and assessing their contribution to catheter blockage. The results show that biofilm-forming ability may be less important to catheter blockage than previously thought, and suggest that inhibiting the rise in urinary pH is a primary target for preventing catheter blockage.

A natural hormone known to inhibit aging can also protect kidneys against renal fibrosis, said researchers from UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Scientists led by Dr. Makoto Kuro-o, associate professor of pathology, showed in mice that the anti-aging hormone Klotho suppressed both renal fibrosis a common complication of chronic kidney disease and the spread of cancer.

More than 26 million people in the U.S. are affected by chronic kidney disease. Klotho also helps patients with acute injury of the kidney that obstructs urine outflow or causes a drop in blood flow to the kidney. Nearly half of the patients in hospital intensive care units have some form of kidney injury due to drugs, surgery, bleeding or dehydration, said Dr. Kuro-o, the study's senior author who discovered Klotho more than a decade ago.

Within a few days after injury, renal function can be completely gone. In that case Klotho injection in a drip infusion could be effective not only as an initial treatment for acute kidney injury, but also to prevent its progression into chronic kidney disease. This offers real hope for patients with renal disease.

Scientists have found that Prostate cancer cells specifically target and eventually overrun the bone marrow niche, a specialized area for hematopoietic stem cells, which make red and white blood cells. They are like bad neighbors who decide to go wreck another community. prostate and breast cancer usually recur in the bone, according to a new University of Michigan study.

Once in the niche, the cancer cells stay dormant and when they become active again years later, that's when tumors recur in the bone. The finding is important because it demonstrates that the bone marrow niche plays a central role in bone metastasis, cancers that spread into the bone giving researchers a new potential drug target. Drugs could be developed to keep the types of cancers that likely recur in the bone from returning.

Cancer cells act a lot like stem cells in that they must reproduce, so the U-M research group hypothesized that prostate cancer cells might travel to the niche during metastasis. One of the jobs of the niche is to keep hematopoietic stem cells from proliferating which may be the case for cancer cells, as well.

Researchers aren't quite sure how the cancer cells out-compete the stem cells in the niche. However, they do know the stem cells were displaced because when cancer cells were in the niche scientists also found evidence of immature blood stem cells in the blood stream, instead of in the marrow where they were supposed to be.

The American Urological Association(AUA) has released the first clinical guidelines for diagnosing and treating interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome.

The guidelines recommend:
1. A full basic assessment, including a careful history, physical examination, and laboratory measures to identify IC/BPS symptoms, such as pain, pressure, and discomfort
2. Measurements of baseline voiding symptoms and pain levels
3. Consideration of cystoscopy and/or urodynamic studies to better assess complicated presentations or to confirm a diagnosis when assessment results are in doubt.

If judging the guidelines recommended, clinicians begin with the most conservative treatments before moving to less conservative approaches. Symptom severity, clinical judgment, and patient preferences should guide initial treatment type. Patients should be counseled with regard to reasonable expectations for treatment outcomes.

Some patients may benefit from multiple, concurrent treatments, the guidelines state. Baseline symptom measurements and regular assessments are critical to document the efficacy of combined versus single treatments. Clinicians should reconsider the diagnosis if patients experience no improvement in symptoms after multiple treatment approaches.

The guidelines do not recommend the use of long-term oral antibiotic therapy; intravesical instillation of bacillus Calmette-Guerin or resininferatoxin; high-pressure, long-duration hydrodistension; or oral long-term glucocorticoid administration.

Recent study conducted by researchers from Tufts Medical Center and Tufts University in Boston, suggests that almost half of all patients diagnosed with prostate cancer could be treated using active surveillance (AS) based on National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines. But it is fewer than 10% actually receive this treatment strategy.

The researchers used information from the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database on 37,646 men diagnosed with non-metastatic PCa in 2006 who had sufficient information on their T-stage, PSA, and Gleason score. Based on NCCN guidelines, the researchers determined the proportion of men for whom AS could be recommended as either the sole treatment strategy or one of the treatment options, and they compared this number with the actual number of men who were treated with AS.

Jokes or break in between hectic schedules definitely increase productivity.

I remember long back one of my surgeon friends who were doing her house surgency was telling me this story. While she was telling me this story I was going through this magazine from Indonesia looking for some updates about Appco Group Indonesia, so I had to ask her to repeat the story. She asked me, "can you think about a surgery where the doctor asks you for rubber band and bra hook". I was like wow, and she said, "well exactly that's it, the doctor wanted me to go and get it".

Now transplant patients can receive kidney from donors of different blood types thanks to this innovative blood cleaning procedure at St. Michael's Hospital in North America, the first one to use this technology. Because of the risk of organ rejection, transplants involving a donor and recipient with different blood types are rare and risky. However this procedure called as plasmapheresis removes  plasma from patient's blood, and runs it through a column-shaped device laced with synthetic carbohydrate beads that trap the blood group antibodies.

The "washed" plasma is then returned to the patient's body. The procedure need to be repeated more than one time to clear all the traces of  the antibodies. The patient will be on medication, which will ensure that his  immune system does not produce more antibodies, which might attack the transplanted kidney. This novel method is likely to be a path breaking invention for millions of transplant patients who are on dialysis for want of matching kidneys.

Watch out kidney patients! If you have a higher waistline then you are at risk of facing death early. As per the study done by Loyola University Health System scientists, those patients who are suffering from kidney problems and have a higher waistline will be at higher risk of facing death at an advanced stage. Taking BMI( body mass index) into consideration which is a height to weight ratio, those women with a waist size equal to or higher than 42.5 inches and for those men who had 48 inches or larger waist line showed earlier risks of death.

According to the analysis done on 5805 patients for the study of Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) who were aged 45 years and older, and was facing surveillance for a period of 4 years showed that 686 patients died during the study. Those who had passed away had 29.2 median BMI which was seemingly lower than the BMI of other patients who were alive.

As BMI consists of many factors like the muscle mass and the abdominal fat, it in itself is not sufficient enough to measure the risks related to fat. But knowing that it can be one of the factors for early death, one need to take enough measures to tackle the problem before it is too late.

Researchers at St. Michael's Hospital have more evidence on the benefits of home dialysis for patients with kidney failure. It was found that the cells that protect the  blood vessels work better in patients who undergo dialysis at home during the night than those who undergo daytime dialysis in a hospital.

This is crucial for patients with kidney failure, which causes damage to the endothelial cells that line blood vessels and help control the flow of blood. Hospital dialysis is effective in treating  kidney failure, nonetheless, many patients develop  blood vessel damage that can lead to many complications like amputation. The results of this research was published in the June issue of the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

A new study suggests that a new targeted therapy for prostate cancer halts tumor growth in animals with advanced prostate cancer that is resistant to hormone therapy. This targeted therapy may provide a treatment breakthrough that will extend the lives of men with advanced, hormone-refractory prostate cancer,

Men with prostate cancer that has recurred or has spread outside the prostate routinely receive androgen deprivation therapy, which blocks the action of the male hormones. This castration occurs through surgical removal of both testes or more often with medications. Although effective, this hormone-blocking treatment eventually stops working in some patients.

Although GPR30 may have a role in cell growth in female tissues, it appears to have the opposite effect in men with hormone-resistant prostate cancer.

The researchers of  Oregon Health & Science University Knight Cancer Institute have discovered  a gene that may help  kidney cancer patients who are not responsive to current therapies. This discovery will help  to identify patients who are most likely to benefit from drugs that block this gene from causing cancer cells to grow. Patients with tumors with high levels of Src had worse survival rates than those with tumors having a weak expression of Src.

Published in the June 1 edition of Science Translational Medicine, the study report identified a gene called Src that helps certain kidney cancers grow, which will help the doctors to suggest specific and effective treatment options for the patients .  In the next phase, clinical trials will be conducted to test how these tumors respond to drugs already available and approved by the FDA. Currently, the  treatment of kidney cancer  involves blocking the formation of new blood vessels, which is successful for some patients and not effective in others

The researchers of the University of Louisville have replicated the inflammatory gene changes of a human kidney as it progresses from mild to severe diabetic nephropathy in mice. Diabetic nephropathy is  one of the most common causes for kidney failure and these studies were  published in the journal Experimental Nephrology.

The exact processes leading to advanced diabetic nephropathy are not clearly understood even today because various limiting factors in the diabetic animal models including  lifespan. Because of these limitations, changes in renal gene expression has been used to track the progression of diabetic nephropathy. These studies  measure the gene's synthesis of messenger RNA and spot the major signaling pathways that are activated by diabetic nephropathy.

This is the first study of gene expression changes of the whole kidney in clinical cases of  mild to very severe albuminuria, a condition common to patients with longstanding diabetes. The studies found that some gene expression differences in  inflammatory genes. increased 10-fold in diabetic mice. Thus, the  strain of diabetic mice could leave clues  into human diabetic nephropathy and the  questions about the role of inflammation in kidney failure.

Do you begin your day over a cup of steaming hot coffee? If yes, then you have a  lower risk of developing a lethal form of prostate cancer, according to a new study led by Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) researchers. The best part is that men who drank both  regular and decaffeinated coffee were equally benefited . The researchers chose to study coffee because of its many useful compounds that act as antioxidants, reduce inflammation, and regulate insulin, all of which may influence prostate cancer. Earlier studies have shown that coffee intake can reduce the risk of  Parkinson's disease, type 2 diabetes, gallstone disease and liver cancer.

Prostate cancer is one of the the most common types of  cancer and is the second leading cause of cancer death among U.S. men, affecting one in six men during their lifetime. The study found that men who consumed six or more cups of coffee daily had a 20% less risk of developing any form of prostate cancer.   It is interesting to note that even coffee drinkers who smoked or were not regular with their work out regimens, seem to have benefited in lowering the risk of cancer with the regular use of coffee. So grab a cup of coffee and remain healthy!

Just resist the temptation of grabbing those barbecued hamburgers every time you pass by your favorite eatery. Studies have shown that people who eat grilled or barbecued hamburgers or any red meat  may be at greater risk for advanced prostate cancer.

A random study comparing 512 cases of aggressive PCa and 470 controls, a team of researchers  at the University of California in San Francisco, found a close association with red meat consumption and instances of prostrate cancer.

Those who ate an average of two or more servings per week of grilled or barbecued hamburgers run a  twofold increase in the risks of cancer when compared to individuals who did not eat these. The study results were discussed in  American Urological Association 2011 annual meeting. Earlier, it was thought that meat cooked at high temperatures resulted in an increased risk of PCa from meats due to production of heterocyclic amines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons alone. So, be saf

Studies have shown that blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin, can reduce biochemical failure- cancer recurrence that is detected by a rising prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level- the risk of metastasis and even death in localized prostate cancer. These studies, although very telling, have all emphasized the need for more data. Now, with researchers at Fox Chase Cancer Center having concluded the largest study on this topic, and there is substantial data suggesting that aspirin improves outcomes in prostate cancer patients who have received radiotherapy.

The readily available drug could be a promising supplement to radiotherapy in prostate cancer patients, and its beneficial effects may generalize to other types of cancer. Still, it's a little premature to say that men need to start taking aspirin if they have a history of prostate cancer.

The optimal dose, timing, and duration of aspirin therapy, as well as potential side effects are not well understood. It's not clear how exactly the aspirin is helping and more research is needed to investigate this. Its possible that aspirin therapy is making the radiation more effective or preventing the cancer from spreading.

A new University of Michigan study have found out that prostate cancer recur in the bone. The researchers said that Prostate cancer cells specifically target and eventually overrun the bone marrow niche, a specialized area for hematopoietic stem cells.

Once in the niche, the cancer cells stay dormant and when they become active again years later, that's when tumors recur in the bone. The implication is that this may give a window as to how dormancy and recurrence take place.

The finding is important because it demonstrates that the bone marrow niche plays a central role in bone metastasis, cancers that spread into the bone, giving researchers a new potential drug target.

Drugs could be developed to keep the types of cancers that likely recur in the bone from returning. For example, these drugs could either halt or disrupt how the cancer cells enter or behave in the niche, or keep the cancer cells from out-competing the stem cells.

New studies have found that diabetics is associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer (PCa), but with a higher risk of other cancers in both men and women. The results provide further evidence that abnormal insulin and glucose signaling may contribute to cancer initiation and development.

Diabetes was associated with an 8% increased risk for cancer among women and a 4% decreased risk for men. In previous studies, a decreased risk for PCa was associated with diabetes, which researchers believe might be due to the lower testosterone levels associated with diabetes. After excluding PCa from their evaluation, diabetes was associated with a 9% increased risk for cancer in men, the researchers reported.

As for mortality, diabetes was associated with an 11% increased risk in women and a 17% increased risk in men. These risk factors appeared to be independent from other cancer risk factors, such as obesity and cigarette smoking.

After evaluating by cancer site, the researchers found that diabetes was associated with a significant increase in the risk for colon, rectal, and liver cancers among men and women. No association was found between diabetes and lung, skin, and other cancers.

Botulinum toxin type A (BTA) injected into the prostate may be a safe and effective treatment for lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This preliminary study report was presented According to preliminary study results presented at the 26th Annual Congress of the European Association of Urology in Vienna.

The report was published after testing the Botulinum toxin in men with BPH who had an unsatisfactory response to combined therapy with an alpha blocker and 5-alpha reductase inhibitor.

The findings show that intraprostatic BTA injections can improve urinary symptoms and quality of life in patients with symptomatic BPH and unsatisfactory response to combined medical therapy or those who refuse surgery or are poor surgical candidates.

In a study conducted on men who had rising PSA levels after primary treatment for the malignancy has proved that pomegranate extract will slow the progression of Prostrate Cancer.

The study was led by Michael A. Carducci, MD, of the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, found that treatment with the pomegranate extract (POMx) was associated with a greater than six-month median increase in PSA doubling time (PSADT).

Earlier a research done on Pomegranate extract had found that it has anti-tumor effects.
